The Handing-Over Ceremony of Eight Cultural Heritages by REGARTLESS

We are excited to share with you that the REGARTLESS team recently returned back eight important Bangwa Cultural treasures to the Lebang Community. We are an Art and Cuture Organization dedicated to protecting, preserving, and promoting African Cultural Heritages. This event was a solemn and great feat for the Fontem people as it celebrated their rich cultural history: and was graced by over 400 people. During the ceremony, the REGARTLESS team officially handed back the ownership of these valuable artifacts to the people of Bangwa. These treasures are very special because they hold a lot of historical, spiritual and cultural meanings; to Lebang people. Traditional Rites and Libations performed to honour the Cultural Heritages As part of receiving the cultural treasures during the ceremony, the Fon of Fontem (HRM Fon Asobatong Fontem Njifua) performed some traditional rites and libations as a sign of cleansing, since these cultural heritages have been away from them for over a century. These rituals were significant in acknowledging and respecting the artistic value and importance of these artefacts which are being handed back.

Traditional Dances
During the ceremony on March 30th, 2024, traditional dances were performed to celebrate and honor these Cultural Heritages. These dances showed the rich culture of the Bangwa people as they demonstrated the lasting traditions and importance of Bangwa heritages; and they left a strong impression on all who saw the performances. Some of the dances performed were as follows:
1. Kezeh Dance: The ceremony began with the vibrant and energetic “Kezeh” dance, which served as a ceremonial welcome to their Majesties. The Kezeh dance is known for its lively movements and rhythmic beats that symbolize joy, unity, and celebration. It is a traditional dance form that holds deep cultural significance among the Bangwa people. | |
2. Peace and Blessing Dance by Twin Parents and Twins:
This special dance for peace and blessing was performed by twin parents and the twins. This dance is a sacred ritual that embodies harmony, prosperity, and blessings for the community. This performance added a unique spiritual dimension to the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of family ties and ancestral connections. This dance was also heighten with the presence of physical shower which come as no surprise, as rain signifies heavenly blessings | |
3. Nkwei Masquerade - War Victory Dance:
One of the ceremonial highlights was the performance of the War victory dance called “Nkwei” Masquerade dance. This special dance is usually not performed outside the Bangwa Palace. The dance was exceptionally performed during this Handing over Ceremony because of the great and important significance of these returned heritages to the people of Fontem. It was used to usher in these Cultural Heritages that are considered spiritual with its powerful and majestic movements; therefore evoking themes of strength, resilience, and triumph over adversity. This dance pays homage to the bravery and valor of the ancestors who fought for their land and heritage.

REGARTLESS President's Speech at the Handing Over Ceremony
The President of REGARTLESS, Miss Slyvie Njobati, in her speech made a statement that resonated with the audience. She acknowledged the pain and suffering caused by the plundering of these cultural treasures. The President’s words reflected a deep understanding of the historical injustices faced by Cameroonians from the colonial perpetrators and the Lebang people in particular: and she reiterated our firm commitments in helping right these wrongs. In her speech, she stated, “We have decided not to wait on those who hurt us to give us healing and closure.” She called on everyone to open their hearts and let this celebration be the beginning of a new journey; one of peace, self-emancipation, and robust cultural identity.

The Fon of the Lebang Community’s Speech on Handing Over Ceremony
The Fon of Fontem, HRM Fon Asobaton Fontem Njifua in his speech, expressed his profound joy in seeing these cultural heritages back. He furthermore, highlighted the significance of the artifacts being returned by the REGARTLESS team, emphasizing that many more of Lebang precious cultural treasures are currently housed in municipal museums all over the world. His Royal Majesty stressed on the importance of these artifacts to the identity and heritage of the Lebang community; thereby, urging the government of Cameroon to dialogue with the Federal Republic of Germany and other holding countries to facilitate the return of these invaluable artifacts.

The President and DG of REGARTLES Honored by the Fon of Fontem
The President and Director-General of REGARTLES were bestowed with prestigious titles by the esteemed Fon of Fontem. This symbolic act marked a significant moment in the history of both REGARTLES and the Lebang community, symbolizing a deep-rooted connection and mutual respect between these entities.

Mafua Anumbong and Nkem Anumbong During the ceremony, the President was honoured with the title “Mafua Anumbong,” which translates to “Queen Mother bearing good things/news.” This title signifies leadership and a bearer of positive developments and prosperity for the community. On the other hand, the Director-General was given the title “Nkem Anumbong,” meaning “notable bearing good things/news.” This title highlights his role as a prominent figure, bringing positive changes and advancements to the Lebang community. Signing of the official handing over documents
During the event, the President and Director-General of REGARTLESS came together to officially give ownership of eight cultural heritages acquired by the REGARTLESS team to the people of the Lebang Community. This act symbolized a big step in protecting and respecting the community’s rich cultural heritage. The Fon of Fontem, who accepted the cultural heritages on behalf of his people, thanked REGARTLESS for obtaining and safeguarding these artifacts. He stated Lebang peoples commitment to ensure that this fight for Africa's cultural identity is a fight that must be won and encouraged the team to continue the good work they have already started. He urged REGARTLESS to also help in the fight to see that their heritages which are trapped in museums abroad are brought back.
The handover document signed during this ceremony solidified the transfer of ownership from REGARTLESS to the people of Fontem. This act formalised the relationship between the organisation and the community and underscored a commitment to cultural preservation and collaboration. It was all smiles for both REGARTLESS and the people of Fontem for these epic event which will forever be in the achieve of history. | |
